Prime Minister Ratas visited the island of Piirissaar

Stenbock House, 4 May 2018 – today, Prime Minister Jüri Ratas visited the island of Piirissaar and met with the local leaders and heads of the local government.

The prime minister met with the representatives of the Tartu Rural Municipality Government and Council, the rescue department, the Police and Border Guard Board, and the local community. The meeting focused on transport between the mainland and the island, but also on the rescue situation, fishing issues, and waste management problems. The prime minister visited the villages as well as the harbour, the rescue house, the local museum, and the shops of Piirissaar.

Ratas said the issues of small island communities are important for him and that he is very grateful for the island’s hospitality. “The viability of the community in Piirissaar is as important as the situation in the rest of Estonia,” he said, and confirmed his desire to pursue a policy that favours a strong and balanced society. “Our goal is to improve life everywhere in Estonia, both in the cities and in the countryside.”
