A decision to recognise the independence of the so-called people’s republics is a serious attack against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. This calls for a clear condemnation and reaction from the international community. I also intend to discuss this matter with European leaders.
The Kremlin’s decision is a very serious infringement of the Minsk agreements and international law. It also creates a pretext for expanding aggression against Ukraine. As a signatory of the Minsk agreement, the Russian Federation took a clear and direct obligation to work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict. I call on the Russian Federation to fulfil its obligations, follow international law and immediately return to the Normandy format and dialogue.”
