Stenbock House, 23 February 2015 – Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas hands over the Ferdinand Johann Wiedemann Language Prize and national research, sports and culture awards at the University of Tartu today at 2015.
„In this ceremony, the Republic of Estonia pays its respects to you because of all the great work you have done - each and every one of you - with excellence and success,“ said Taavi Rõivas in his welcome speech held in the ceremony of handing over the language prize and other national awards at the University of Tartu. “With these awards, our state recognizes the people who have excelled in their fields of speciality last year, either in terms of scientific research or sports achievements. Many thanks! Dearest winners, the Lifetime Achievement Awards are the greatest respect the Republic of Estonia can pay to you. Please accept my deep appreciation!”
The recipients of the language prize and the awards were determined by the Government of the Republic at their session of 12 February.
The Ferdinand Johann Wiedemann Language Prize was given to Mrs Leelo Tungal for her distinguished creative work with regard to many original and translated poetical and prose works, teaching work and Estonian textbooks, editing of children magazine “Hea Laps” (Good Child), formation of the concept of the Estonian Song Festival and reflections on a Soviet childhood in “Seltsimees Laps” (Comrade Child). The value of the Language Prize is 32.000 euros.
National research awards of 40.000 euros for a long-term successful research and development work were given to Jüri Engelbrecht and Anto Raukas. Eight national research awards, each of which is endowed with 20.000 euros, were given as well to the best research works which were completed and published over the past four years.
This year, national Lifetime Achivement Awards for Culture were given to Ene Mihkelson, Kalju Komissarov and Raul Meel. A Lifetime Achivement Award for Culture is given for a long-term distinguished creative work and the value thereof is 64.000 euros. Annual Culture Award was given for outstanding creative achievements that were accomplished and made available to the general public last year and the value of one award is 9.600 euros. Five Annual Culture Awards are given every year.
The winners of Lifetime Achivement Award for Sports are Enn Tasalain and Jaak Uudmäe. This award is given to a person whose lifetime contribution to the Estonian sports has earned respect of the general public and set a good example to young people. The value of the Lifetime Achivement Award for Sports is 40.000 euros. Six persons received the Annual Award. The recipients of the Annual Awards are selected taking into consideration their last year’s sports achievements, success ´made in coaching, organisation of sports work, contribution to sports promotion, physical education or sports science. The value of the Annual Award is 9.600 euros.
