Tallinn, Alexela Concert Hall, 17 September 2018 – “Universities designate direction in society and create a frame for our collective decisions,” said Prime Minister Jüri Ratas in his speech on the 100th anniversary of the Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech).
Introducing The Future Started Yesterday, an anniversary production that interprets the honourable history of the University, the prime minister gave his regards to all rectors, lecturers, and employees, but also to students who have made the Tallinn University of Technology what it is today and contributed to the success story of Estonia.
Referring to Jaak Aaviksoo, academician and Rector of the University, the Prime Minister emphasised that during its development as well as today, TalTech has always been a challenge instead of a choice of convenience. “I was reminded of these words when I was watching With Mind and Hand, a documentary produced in honour of the 100th anniversary of the University of Technology. The documentary portrayed some of the early times of the university: evening naps on drawing tables, hard work starting every morning. Until Saturday evenings – Saturdays were sauna evenings. Sundays were for relaxation and on Monday mornings, everything began again,” the prime minister said. “And so for a hundred years. All work. This is a proven theorem that needs no second-guessing,” he added.
The prime minister also participated in the festive ceremony of TalTech, where they announced the alumnus of the year, and conferred Doctors and Honorary Doctors. The prime minister, also a graduate of TalTech, emphasised that all who consider the University of Technology as their alma mater are united by a wish to reflect on the world and find meaning in it.
