PRESS RELEASE SEPTEMBER 20, 1999

Fifty-fifth Anniversary of Otto Tief Government Observed

On September 18, 55 years ago, Acting President-Prime Minister Jüri Uluots appointed Otto Tief`s government into office.

The restoration of the governmental organs of the Republic of Estonia during the eventful September of 1944 is important, because it affirmed the juridical continuation of the Republic of Estonia, and it showed that Estonia accepted neither the Soviet occupation nor the 3-year period of German occupation.

To date, the restored independent Estonia has placed little emphasis on the historical and juridical importance of the Tief government. Yet, it is one of the essential parts of the adherence to the principle of juridical continuation of the Republic of Estonia.

In order to observe the event, the Prime Minister hosts tonight at Toompea, at 18:00 o'clock, a dinner for those who were associated with the National Committee, the Otto Tief government, and the Haukka reconnaissance group.
