Stenbock House, Tallinn, 2 November 2018 – Prime Minister Jüri Ratas visited Ämari Air Base, where he greeted the German Air Force personnel who are currently serving on the Baltic Air Policing mission. The prime minister was also given an overview of the new infrastructure objects that were financed from the European Deterrence Initiative of the U.S.

“The contributions of the Germans to protecting the Baltic airspace is impressive. They have done it almost every year since 2014, and will continue their mission in Ämari at the beginning of next year, as well,” Ratas said upon meeting with Lieutenant Colonel Swen Jacob, commander of the German contingent currently stationed in Ämari. The prime minister added that the allies’ contribution to the development of the air base will help to improve the conditions and training opportunities for NATO units in the future. At the meeting, which was also attended by Colonel Riivo Valge, Commander of the Estonian Air Force, safety requirements for military aircraft and their armament were also discussed.

Since August, 160 members and five Eurofighter jets of the German Air Force have been stationed in Estonia. It is the fourth German contingent to serve on the mission in Ämari.

Over the past three years, the European Deterrence Initiative has funded the Ämari base as well as important facilities of the Tapa Army Base.
