Seoul, South Korea, 14 February 2018 – today, Prime Minister Jüri Ratas met with Lee Nak-yeon, Prime Minister of South Korea. At the meeting, Ratas confirmed that Estonia is interested in starting regular cyber consultations with South Korea and invited the country to participate in the digital summit taking place in Tallinn at the end of November.

“Estonia and South Korea share similar values and face similar challenges. We are quickly developing digital societies and pathfinders in e-governing, which is why we are part of the Digital 5 network with the United Kingdom, Israel, and New Zealand. Therefore, as e-governments, we sense cyber threats even more acutely,” Ratas said.

Representatives of Estonia, South Korea, and other countries of the Digital 5 will discuss the development of the digital society more broadly on 21–22 February at the high-level meeting taking place in Wellington, New Zealand. The meeting has four focus points: using big data in healthcare, attracting digital talent, creating a digital identity, and cooperation with citizen initiatives. Urve Palo, Minister of Entrepreneurship and Information Technology, will represent Estonia at the meeting.

At their meeting, Prime Ministers Ratas and Lee noted that the economic and trade relations of the two countries should be stimulated. “Estonian open economy and transparent investing environment will surely be of interest to South Korean investors. Cooperation with the Gyeonggi province supporting information technology companies will create prerequisites for the growth of investment,” Ratas said.

With close to 600 submitted applications, South Koreans have also warmly welcomed the e-residency programme. Since the end of last year, e-residents can receive their card from the visa centre in Soul – the first ever issuing office of digital IDs for e-residents. President Kersti Kaljulaid officially opened the issuing office last week.

The Prime Ministers also discussed the security situation around the Pacific Ocean, sanctions against North Korea, and opportunities to alleviate the tension through dialogue.
