Prime Minister accepts the resignation of minister Jaak Aab

17. April 2018 - 15:06

Stenbock House, 17 April 2018 – Prime Minister Jüri Ratas accepted the letter of resignation from Jaak Aab, Minister of Public Administration, and will forward it to President Kersti Kaljulaid. The name of the new minister will be announced in the coming weeks, after the board of the Estonian Centre Party has confirmed the candidate in their meeting.

Minister Jaak Aab is resigning due to driving under the influence of alcohol and exceeding the speed limit.

Comment of Prime Minister Jüri Ratas:

"I accepted the letter of resignation with a heavy heart. Unfortunately, there is no other way. This type of behaviour is not acceptable for any driver. Minister Jaak Aab has learned a real lesson from what has happened, which is reflected in his statesmanlike decision to resign.

It also serves as an important message to all road users. When in doubt, always use a breathalyser before driving to make sure alcohol ingested in the previous night has left your system.

I wish to acknowledge Jaak Aab for a job well done as the Minister of Public Administration. He managed his field with utmost thoroughness and expertise during the great reforms. Jaak Aab was of great support for the government not only in his own field of expertise, but also contributed strongly to health and social fields as a former Minister of Social Affairs.

My objective is to present a new candidate for the position of Minister of Social Affairs to the board of the Estonian Centre Party and then to the public."

Pursuant to Government of the Republic Act, the prime minister has to convey the letter of resignation to the president within one month. The time is given for the Prime Minister to find a person for the position. The new minister is appointed to the office by the President of the Republic within three days of receiving the respective proposal from the prime minister. The new minister shall assume office by taking an oath of office before the Riigikogu.
