Stenbock House, 27 August 2020 – At today’s Cabinet Meeting, the Government decided in principle to support the organisation of World Cleanup Day in September with EUR 250,000.

At the Cabinet Meeting it was decided that the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Finance must prepare a corresponding application, after which the Government would be able to approve the allocation of funds during the session.

According to Prime Minister Jüri Ratas, World Cleanup, which began in Estonia, is the largest civic initiative in the world, in which tens of millions of people have participated since 2012. ‘World Cleanup Day, led by Estonia, has become a national brand, which conveys a strong message about the cooperation of many countries for a cleaner environment around the world. The Government considers it important that World Cleanup Day be able to continue’ he said.

World Cleanup Day is set to take place on 19 September of this year. Unlike in previous years, many countries will be using individual or digital cleaning as an alternative, due to the spread of the coronavirus. World Cleanup Day is organised and managed by the non-profit organisation Let’s Do It World.

Last year, 21.2 million people from 180 countries took part in World Cleanup.
