Berlin, 14 February 2012 – Prime Minister Andrus Ansip was on a working visit to Germany on Monday, February 13 at the invitation of Chancellor Angela Merkel, and was a guest at an unofficial dinner held at Schloss Meseberg near Berlin. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and the head of Danish government Helle Thorning-Schmidt were also invited to the dinner.
The goal of the meeting is to exchange thoughts about the future of the European Union and the economic and monetary union. All four heads of governments expressed the position that even closer cooperation was necessary to strengthen the European Union.
Ansip prefaced his remarks on developments in the European Union by saying he sees Europe as a strong, competitive region with strong financial discipline, a flawlessly operating internal market, and a properly developed infrastructure.
“Estonia wants the new multi-year budget plan to be aimed more at developing cross-border connections,” said Ansip.
The heads of government also agreed to the need to eliminate obstacles to the functioning of the internal market, above all in the field of services.
Among other things, the status of the preparations for the second Greece aid programme was discussed. The Prime Minister said they stood prepared to assist Greece only if the Greeks were committed to helping themselves.
