Prime Minister Ansip expresses support for Moldova’s EU aspirations

Tallinn, Stenbock House, 18th June 2010 – At a meeting with the Moldovan Foreign Minister, Iurie Leancă, Prime Minister Andrus Ansip expressed support for the Moldova’s EU aspirations.

The Prime Minister affirmed that Estonia continues to support the further enlargement of the European Union, although all potential new members must fulfil the required accession criteria. “The reforms that Estonia implemented in order to join the European Union were necessary for our country and people,” Ansip said. Moldova’s Foreign Minister confirmed that their goal is to put Moldova on the map of Europe and they are strongly motivated to continue with significant reforms. “There is no other path for us apart from membership of the European Union,” Leancă said.

The Foreign Minister expressed the wish to increase the political dialogue between the two countries in order to learn from Estonia’s experiences. “I believe that our people would be ready to use the e-services that are popular in Estonia,” Leancă said. The Prime Minister introduced Estonia’s e-government and other governmental e-services to the visitor.

The Moldovan Foreign Minister, who is in Estonia at the invitation of Foreign Minister Urmas Paet, congratulated Estonia on its imminent entry into the euro area. The Prime Minister thanked the visitor and confirmed that Estonia must continue its conservative budgetary policies in the future, which serves the interests of the country and the people.

Prime Minister Andrus Ansip visited Moldova three years ago, in November 2007, when Ansip met with the prime minister, parliament speaker and foreign minister. Prime Minister Ansip was accompanied by a large business delegation. The Prime Minister of Moldova will visit Estonia on 14th July.
